Battersea Power Station: does it live up to the hype?

As a London native, I've always been fascinated by Battersea Power Station, the Grade II* listed building located on the south bank of the River Thames in Battersea with its distinctive four chimneys and Art Deco style.

I remember visiting the power station as a child, back when it was still decommissioned and not much more than a dilapidated shell of a building. It was still impressive, but it was hard to imagine the potential that the building held.

Over the years, I watched as Battersea Power Station underwent several redevelopment projects, with the most recent one being completed in 2020. The development included the construction of luxury apartments, offices, shops, restaurants, and a public park.

Now, as an adult, I've had the chance to visit Battersea Power Station again and see the transformation for myself. I have to say, I was thoroughly impressed. The building itself is still as impressive as ever, with its unique style and grandeur, and once you are inside the high ceilings and chic design elements create an elegant and sophisticated atmosphere that you'll want to admire.

Visiting during the festive season was certainly a good choice, I was immediately struck by the towering Christmas tree and the sound of laughter coming from the ice rink and funfair. The surrounding area has also undergone a transformation, with a range of new amenities and a bustling atmosphere.

That being said, as a London native, I do have to admit that Battersea Power Station doesn't quite feel like it's for me. Many of the shops and restaurants are focused on luxury brands and high-end experiences, which isn't really my scene. That's not to say that I don't appreciate the redevelopment and all it's brought to the area, but it does feel a bit like it's catering more to tourists and outsiders rather than locals.

Overall, I think Battersea Power Station is a fantastic attraction for anyone visiting London. Its history, architecture, and redevelopment make it a must-see for any tourist. However, as a London native, it doesn't quite feel like it's for me. That being said, it's still worth a visit if you're in the area and have the time to explore.
